Tsavo East National Park
Tsavo East National Park is one of Kenya’s largest and most dramatic safari destinations, known for vast open landscapes, red-soil plains and abundant wildlife. Its remote wilderness provides a classic safari experience, with elephants, lions, buffalo and giraffes roaming across a landscape shaped by rivers, lava flows and seasonal wetlands.
Tsavo East is famous for its red elephants, which often appear coated in the park’s distinctive red dust. The park is also home to lions, leopards, buffalo, giraffes, zebras, hippos and numerous bird species, offering rewarding game viewing across its expansive wilderness.
The park’s landscapes are just as impressive as its wildlife. The Galana River, Aruba Dam and Lugard Falls provide important water sources and attract wildlife, while the Yatta Plateau stretches across the horizon. Tsavo East can also be combined easily with a coastal holiday in Mombasa, Diani or Watamu.
Tsavo East can be visited throughout the year, although the dry seasons from June to October and January to February are generally excellent for wildlife viewing. During these months, animals gather around reliable water sources and vegetation is less dense.
The rainy seasons bring greener landscapes and abundant birdlife. The March to May long rains can make some roads challenging, while the November to December short rains often produce brief showers followed by periods of sunshine.
Tsavo East offers a wide range of safari experiences, from classic game drives across open plains to exploring rivers, viewpoints and some of the park’s most recognisable landmarks.
