Tsavo West National Park
Tsavo West National Park is a spectacular wilderness of volcanic landscapes, rolling hills, ancient lava flows and natural springs. Known for its diverse wildlife and dramatic scenery, the park offers a different safari experience from the open plains of Tsavo East, with elephants, lions, buffalo, giraffes and rhinos.
Tsavo West combines remarkable wildlife with some of Kenya’s most striking landscapes. The park is home to elephants, lions, leopards, buffalo, giraffes, zebras and the endangered black rhino. Its varied terrain also provides excellent opportunities for photography and scenic game drives.
The park’s natural attractions make it particularly rewarding to explore. Mzima Springs is a lush oasis where clear underground water creates pools inhabited by hippos and crocodiles. You can also explore the Shetani Lava Flows, admire the volcanic scenery around the Chaimu Crater, and enjoy views across the surrounding wilderness.
Tsavo West is open throughout the year, with the dry seasons from June to October and January to February generally offering good wildlife-viewing conditions. Animals tend to gather around water sources, while thinner vegetation makes them easier to spot.
The rainy seasons bring fresh greenery and excellent birdwatching. The March to May long rains can make some roads difficult to navigate, while the November to December short rains usually bring shorter periods of rainfall.
Tsavo West offers a combination of wildlife, volcanic scenery and natural attractions, making it an excellent choice for a safari combined with Kenya’s coastal destinations.
