Samburu National Reserve

Samburu National Reserve is one of Kenya’s most distinctive safari destinations, located in the rugged landscapes of northern Kenya along the banks of the Ewaso Ng’iro River. The reserve is known for its dramatic scenery, dry savannahs, rocky hills and diverse wildlife. It is particularly famous for the Samburu Special Five — Grevy’s zebra, reticulated giraffe, gerenuk, Beisa oryx and Somali ostrich — species that are strongly associated with northern Kenya.

The reserve also offers excellent opportunities to see elephants, lions, leopards, cheetahs, buffaloes and many bird species. The combination of wildlife, striking landscapes and Samburu culture makes a visit different from the classic savannah experience found in southern Kenya. Its relatively remote setting also provides a quieter safari experience.

Samburu National Reserve offers a safari experience that feels distinctly different from Kenya’s more famous southern parks. Samburu can be visited throughout the year, but the dry seasons from June to October and January to February are generally popular for wildlife viewing. During these periods, vegetation is less dense and animals tend to gather around water sources, making them easier to spot.

The March to May long rains and October to December short rains can bring greener landscapes and fewer visitors. Rain can occasionally affect road conditions, but the reserve remains open for safari activities.
