Watamu, Kenya
Watamu is a beautiful coastal destination north of Mombasa, known for its white-sand beaches, turquoise waters, coral reefs and rich marine life. The relaxed atmosphere, tropical scenery and nearby wildlife attractions make it an excellent choice for a beach holiday combined with nature, adventure and coastal culture.
Watamu is particularly appealing for its protected marine environment. Watamu Marine National Park and Reserve shelters colourful coral gardens, sea turtles, tropical fish and other marine life, making the area popular for snorkelling, diving and boat excursions.
There is plenty to discover beyond the beach. Visit the Gede Ruins, explore Mida Creek, or discover the conservation work of the Local Ocean Conservation organisation. The nearby Arabuko-Sokoke Forest also provides opportunities to see rare birds, butterflies, monkeys and other forest wildlife.
Watamu is warm throughout the year, although the drier months from June to October and January to February are generally ideal for beach activities, marine excursions and exploring the surrounding attractions.
The March to May long rains and November to December short rains can bring occasional showers. The landscape is greener during these periods, while the warm coastal climate continues to make Watamu an appealing destination.
